To say we had a blast today would be an understatement. Thanks to everyone who came out today. As we were playing we had to create and design the rules to meet our needs. I did update the previous post but I wanted to ensure anyone subscribing got the updates. I will get pictures and videos posted when I get them from Jason and Ivan.

Special Thanks to John, Jaques, Ivan, Jason, Tamar, KJ, and Titan playing today. Sorry about bruised and cut hands as we discovered gloves are really needed.

Rules

Player and Equipment

  • Single Tank Only – must be mounted on a BCD or wing and backplate
  • Players non stick hand must be holding their own harness or strap. Right-handed players grip right strap with left hand. This prevents flailing and hitting other divers.
  • Helmets highly suggested at this time but will be required later. Scuba hoods with head and ear protection required. “Squirrel hats” with a helmet or water polo head protection may be used. Link for Helmet
  • Protective gloves required for stick hand. Diving gloves or Mechanix style gloves recommended.
  • All dive gear will be inspected by Dive Master or Assistants (DM in Training)
  • A regulation water hockey stick must be used and will either be white or black. Players providing their own sticks must have one in each color unless allowed by the Dive Master. Sticks must receive an inspection for play from the Dive Master for safety and fairness of play. Link for left/right black/white sticks

Game Play

  • Each game will consist of two halves, each half is 8 minutes. The clock will run continuous unless the referee must call for a conference on the surface of the water to speak to players.
  • The referee will drop the puck for a face off. Each puck drop will be no higher than 6 inches from the bottom of the pool. The puck will not be dropped on top of any plastic device, pool filter, or pool jet.
    • If there is no referee then a modified 1-2-3 face-off will be used.
  • “Bait-balling will not be allowed. At no time can no more than two defensemen engage a member of the offense.
    • Bait-balling is where there is a mass collection of players all on the puck.
  • A goal is scored when
    • Long Field (5 on 5, 4 on 4) when the puck crosses the goal line
    • Short Field- (3 on 3 or 2 on 2) when the puck is shot into the goal
  • Players may substitute at any time
  • The referee will have a rattle or a diver recall to be used
    • Long blast/ rattle prior to the drop of the puck to ensure all players are alert to play or during a goal/ when the goal is scored.
    • Continuous ” dots and dashes” to stop play
    • SOS (dot dot dot, dash dash dash dot dot dot) in an emergency
  • Players will not grab hold of equipment of another player at any time. If caught, must sit out without substitution for 2 minutes (self monitored)
  • Players will not unmask other players
  • All contact is incidental. It is the players responsibility to not get struck with helmet, tank, stick, fins or any other part of the players they are playing with or against.
  • Players will self check and buddy check air during stoppage of play.
  • Referees will remind played to check after each goal.
  • Malicious play will result in ejection of the player and possible debarment from future dive activities
Scrimmage and goofing around with making the rules. Thanks Ivan for the vid
