This is a mantra I use in nearly every lesson, every coaching, and even at the end of my podcast. Its as simpje as teaching a new diver which side their regulators are on their scuba unit or as deep as helping someone working through depression or anxiety how to navigate the things life can throw at you. It’s come from my own life as a diver using scuba as a metaphor for developing resilience.
Just as 90% of the life altering problems a diver can face, dropped mask, regulator line fouled, entanglement, flooded mask, or a myriad of other issues, a diver can resolve those problems. Its why we train and build up the knowledge and skill set to face them and consistently train on them in stressful environmental.
In the vast expanse of life’s ocean, we often find ourselves submerged in challenges, much like a diver exploring the depths of the sea. Just as a diver relies on a steady supply of air to navigate underwater realms, we, too, can draw inspiration from this concept in facing the complexities of our daily lives.
Imagine a diver deep beneath the surface, where every obstacle and unknown is met with the assurance that, as long as they have air, 90% of the problems can be resolved. This principle resonates strongly when applied to the multifaceted stresses adults encounter on a regular basis.
From the workplace pressures that demand our attention to financial concerns that weigh on our minds, the constant ebb and flow of life presents challenges that can feel as formidable as the ocean’s depths. However, much like a diver’s reliance on the air supply, recognizing and maintaining our foundational elements become paramount in the face of overwhelming stresses.
Major life changes, such as job loss, financial crises, health issues, or relationship challenges, can be akin to navigating treacherous currents. Yet, the fundamental principle remains — as long as we have our emotional and psychological “air,” we possess the resilience to confront and resolve a significant portion of life’s challenges.
Embracing mindfulness, akin to a diver maintaining awareness of their surroundings underwater, can provide a stabilizing force in the turbulent waters of daily existence. It becomes a guiding light, reminding us that, no matter how deep the dive, as long as we maintain our metaphorical air, we have the strength to endure and emerge stronger.
Just as a diver relies on support systems and equipment to ensure a safe dive, in our lives, seeking assistance from friends, family, or professionals is crucial. Together, we can navigate the complexities and uncertainties, knowing that, much like a diver armed with air, we possess the capacity to overcome, adapt, and thrive.
So, let’s dive into life’s challenges with the confidence that, as long as we have our emotional and mental “air,” we can navigate the depths, unravel complexities, and emerge alright on the other side.
As long as you have air, you are alright.
