Today, I had to head out to recover an anchor. The winds were fierce from the east, and a massive storm was closing in from the southeast. The lake was alive with whitecaps, and I knew I had to act fast. This wasn’t just about finding the fastest way to the spot—it was about reading the water and the wind, knowing how to navigate through treacherous conditions without falling victim to the elements. It’s something John Kretschmer writes about in Sailing to the Edge of Time—how experience and intuition become your greatest tools when nature throws everything at you.

As I crossed the lake, I had to consider not just the visible obstacles but the ones lurking below the surface—just like in life. Tristan Gooley, in How to Read Water, talks about how the water communicates with us, if we’re willing to listen. I could feel the subtle shifts in the current, the way the waves moved, and knew exactly when to adjust my course. There were dangerous rises barely visible, covered in jagged concrete and rebar. One wrong move, and Discovery could have taken a hit that I couldn’t afford. But I was ready for this.

The thrill wasn’t just in the challenge of retrieving the anchor. It was in using all of my knowledge, everything I’ve learned from reading the water and studying the skies, to conquer the elements. As the rain and hail beat down, I felt that rush of adventure. I knew exactly where I needed to go, and even though visibility would be zero once I was under the water, I trusted my instincts. Gooley emphasizes the power of understanding the subtle language of nature, and that’s what I relied on to guide me through.

This wasn’t just a task; it was an adventure in every sense. The spirit of sailing and exploring isn’t just about the smooth days or easy voyages—it’s about how you rise to meet the storm. Today, I got to live that fully, knowing that every decision, every small course correction, was a testament to what Kretschmer and Gooley have written about. It’s in these moments, when you’re truly tested, that you find out what you’re capable of—whether on the water or navigating through life’s challenges.
